AbstractOne of the key roadblocks to innovation in electric energy systems is lack of protocols for dynamic information exchange needed to operate the system efficiently and reliably as system conditions vary. Moreover, the current practice does not guarantee theoretically provable performance; practice has been known to lead to blackouts, and this indicates that today's practice does not guarantee practically provable performance. This invention provides a unified physics-based problem posing of monitoring and decision making in complex energy systems by introducing their consistent modeling as complex dynamical systems in support ofDyMonDS (as Dynamic Monitoring and Decision Systems). The invention offers a unified working model based on fundamental physical principles. This is the key to the invention which is utilized for modeling muti-layered multi-temporal dynamics and the objectives of the interconnected system resulting from meeting sub-objectives of different groups of components (intelligent Balancing Authorities). It is shown in this invention that such unified modeling approach becomes the basis for defining the information exchange required and protocols for monitoring and dynamic decision making in complex energy systems. Last, but not least, we propose information exchange protocols which are private and secure. The same modeling framework is used to justify this claim. Notably, the implications of having such protocols are far reaching.
